UT PCL Renovation

The Scholar’s Lab is the latest addition to the Scholar’s Commons located on the second floor of the Perry-Castaneda Library at The University of Texas. The 16,000 square foot renovation transformed a suite of underutilized study areas, cramped offices and conference rooms, into an open and transparent space reflective of the library’s mission to provide flexible spaces and approaches for research, and support learning, consultation, and collaboration.

The existing suite was expanded by relocating the entrance directly across from the main lobby service desk with full-height glazing permitting views through the entire space and inviting all users to explore the vibrant new space. In the suite, open study areas surround the central Data Lab. Special attention was given to the acoustics and visibility. Not only can classes and programs be held without disturbing the adjacent study areas, but the large movable partition at the back of the room can open to expand the lab size of 32 to a presentation audience of over 75. On the other side of the data lab, the central mass was carved out to create small reading nooks for individuals and open huddle rooms for small groups. Opposite of these spaces are the 6 reservable, hybrid meeting-enabled project rooms as well as an area for staff and private consultations.

Through the design team’s process of thorough investigation and coordination, the team was able to provide exposed ceilings in the open study area, raising the ceiling height from 11 feet to over 16 feet. This, in addition to the expansive use of glass, helps bring natural light deep into the existing building. An essential aspect to a healthy building and the success of the project.
